Shuffleboard, with roots reaching back to Medieval England and institutionalized in Florida in the 20th century, is a game of both skill and strategy. It can be played as an individual or team sport and offers players of all ages – from young children to senior citizens and even those with physical disabilities – the opportunity to play and compete on equal terms.
Similar in concept to curling or bowls, Shuffleboard has the advantage that the courts it is played on and the necessary equipment are versatile and inexpensive. From hotels, resorts and campsites to social clubs and residences for the elderly and even private homes and back yards, Shuffleboard can be easily installed and provides an attractive and highly competitive leisure activity which will soon have an avid band of followers.
The key to being successful at Shuffleboard is not speed or strength. Shuffleboard requires good hand-eye coordination and a strategic approach, along with the ability to adapt to your opponent’s game plan as it becomes apparent. It is especially popular among those whose physical condition does not permit them to participate in many other sports, and is an ideal inter-generational and family pastime.
Shuffleboard requires players to slide coloured discs along the court into a target area which rewards good shots with different levels of points. However, your opponent will be trying to block your discs or even shoot them out of the way to prevent you from scoring, so your game plan must encompass both offensive and defensive strategies.
Most courts offer the facility to play from both ends, and the player or team either with most points after a pre-agreed number of “ends” or reaching a pre-defined number of points wins the game. Players can compete individually or in teams of two players.
Shuffleboard courts are available in a number of sizes and materials to suit all locations and budgets. From the full-size championship Polycourt (assembled from UV and weather resistant plastic tiles) which can remain installed indoors or outdoors from spring to autumn, to easy-to-use Roll-Out Courts which are quickly and easily installed and dismantled, KG Shuffleboard offers a number of versatile options, along with a full range of cues, discs and other ancillary equipment, such as scoreboards or rules books.
